If you do not have XFree86 installed, the script will notice this and quit. 2) Make sure you are logged into your system as root. The installation script will check for this and quit if you are not logged in as root. 3) If X is running, shut it down and get to a text command prompt. If your system automatically starts X, check your /etc/inittab file and make sure the default run level is set to Multiuser (or equivalent) and not X11. 4) Change to the directory where you have downloaded the 395_xf86_1011.tar.gz file. 5) run: gunzip 395_xf86_1011.tar.gz 6) run: tar xvf 395_xf86_1011.tar.gz 7) change to the 395_xf86_1011.tar.gz directory 8) run: ./install.sh. If this refuses to run, typing "sh install.sh" should do the trick. If you get a failure at this step then something is wrong with your Linux installation or the file has become corrupted. 9) It should show "Installation Complete." 10) start your X server (usually by running startx) to test your installation. ----------------------- Savage Linux driver FAQ ----------------------- Q: I run the install.sh file and it tells me I must be root to install the server and tools. A: You are logged into your system under a user account. Logout of your system and make sure you are logging into your system using the username root. Q: I run the install.sh file and it tells me I must have XFree86 installed. A: Your installation of Linux either does not include a standard installation file or you really do not have XFree86 installed. If you are 100% certain you have XFree86 installed then your copy of XFree86 may not be supported by the driver. ================================================================= S3 Incorporated (c) 1993-2000, All Rights Reserved =================================================================
